Korean Hapkido in Warwickshire
This is a personal page of about the art of Korean Hapkido Sung Moo Kwan. As practised by myself and my brother David Hastings. Sung Moo Kwan is a Great Passions for both of us and has changed and directed both of our lives over the last 20 odd years of our life creating the men that we are, sometimes for the better sometimes for the worst.
During our study and practice we have had to face many personal demons and look at the deeper leavels of our conscious and subconscious minds. Not an easy thing to do but essential in the martial arts.
We have both developed skills in different areas of the art and have studied and trained with the best in these areas.
David developed skills in the area of close quarters combat and has taught this angle of our art to doormen, bouncers, police officers and members of the military in the UK and abroad. The security industry was David's domains and down the years he has encountered many situations to test and develop his skills.
Much of what is taught in martial arts is not street effective and does not work in real life when someone is really attempting to kill you. We learnt from people who has been there done it and bought the tea shirts. So in this area Sung Moo Kwan is not an art form it is controlled violence, highly destructive and very messy to get the results. Our motto has been . “Maxime distraction to the human body, in the shortest time, with the least effort. So we walk away. Safe.”
David now operates a photography company in Warwickshire. He is also an advanced practitioner of EFT Emotional Freedom Therapy, the healing arts are very much a part of Sung Moo Kwan. Our master Mike Forster is an acupuncturist in Canada. Korean Hapkido Academy Chief Instructor David Hastings tel: Website:
My direction in martial arts and especially hapkido took me into the areas of mental, emotional, spiritual and the healing arts. These were learnt along with the destructive and self protection parts of our art. The self protection area is one that I fully support.
Self defence in your.
- Physical life.
- Spiritual self defence and growth.
- Mental self defence and attack from yourself and others.
- Emotional self defence and control.
- Financial self defence.
In my view unless an art teaches all the areas it is not teaching self defence. It should not be taught as such. My master agrees with me however it has got me into some conflict with lesser martial artists.
The physical aspect is vital but lets get real if you have to drop someone you got it wrong, unless your chosen profession if that of controlled aggression. Although I still train most of my training is now in other realms.
I offers hapkido students, martial artists personal private lessons in hapkido, self defence, yoga, flexibility training and mental combat and the age old fight with themselves. I sell on this site a range of extremely powerful self hypnosis CD’s and MP3 down loads that allow martial artists to each day grow in self awareness and power the link is at the bottom of this page.
Your mind is the most dangerous weapon you have. Learn the lost secrets of mental combat and control.

The roots of the martial arts go back into areas of unrecorded history and the secrecy surrounding them make the exact tracing of their development almost impossible. The most popular of the modern martial arts have histories that can be traced back only a few hundred years before the myths begin to outnumber the facts. There were two major systems that influenced the development of Hapkido. The first began with the T’ang dynasty in China. The techniques developed at this time quickly spread throughout Asia and were incorporated into the various fighting systems currently in use. By 337 A.D. these techniques had developed into a system in Korea known as T’ang hand. These techniques evolved into a system known as tae kyun which developed during and after the Silla Dynasty in Korea 670-935 A.D.
These techniques were taught exclusively to royalty and the nobility of the country and an organisation was formed known as Hwarangdo which comprised of these members of the martial class. Modern day Korean Hapkido was derived from the techniques taught to the hwarangdo and until recently was a jealously guarded secret. The second system influencing the development of Hapkido was from Japan, the daito-ryu-aiki-ju-jitsu system which is said to have originated with Prince Tei jun 850-880 A.D. During this period there were more than 750 recognised schools of ju-jitsu all teaching various combat methods of fighting using kicks, punches, armlocks, etc. Again this style was jealously guarded and handed down from generation to generation through the founders family, in this case the Minamoto family. Eventually it was handed down to the Takeda family and it was Dr Sogaku Takeda who taught the system to the founder of modern day Korean Hapkido, Yong Sool Choi. When the Japanese invaded Korea in 1910 all martial arts were prohibited. Many of the practitioners studied in secrecy while Choi went to Japan to live and to continue his studies of the arts. In 1950 Choi went back to Korea and with his student Ji Han Jae, opened up a school in an old garage in Seoul.
Ji was an exponent of the Korean martial arts which were basically offensive but when the techniques were combined with the basically defensive style of aiki-ju-jitsu a very complete and effective self defence system was formulated.
What is Hapkido?
A method of self defence involving throwing, twisting, kicking, punching, blocking, nerve and pressure point attacks and weapons techniques. The adversaries power is utilised to your best advantage because of circular movement and deflection techniques involved. The theories of Korean Hapkido are very involved, encompassing the principles of dynamics and relative force and speed.
The techniques are designed to have maximum disabling results in event of attack. Although free sparring is practised, there is no competitive fighting in Hapkido. The development and evolvement of the art has been strictly combative.
Who Can Practice Hapkido?
Anyone young or old can be involved in Korean Hapkido. Great strength is not required in the application of the techniques since the attackers force is redirected to your advantage. When learned, these techniques can be applied immediately with little or no effort.
What is Taught in Hapkido?
The theory of Korean Hapkido is deep and it’s techniques are many, over 14,000 and although a person could not remember each individual technique there are a smaller number of techniques forming a nucleus from which many variations are applied.
Over 500 techniques are taught up to black belt level including basic and combination kicks and punches, throws, joint locks, pressure points and knife defence. A verity of weapons techniques are taught after black belt including sword, long and short stick, cane and rope or towel. Although breaking techniques are only required for higher levels of black belt, they are available if a student desires to learn.
The Meaning of Hapkido?
Literally translated Hapkido means the way of harmony and spirit, a joining of the mind and body as one unit. This fusion is hard to conceive and only through training and the proper application of breathing techniques can it be realised.
The Hapkido crest depicts an eagle catching an arrow in flight, signifying the importance of mind and body co-ordination.

The Korean Hapkido Academy offers it’s students the opportunity to learn a traditional Korean martial art that has it’s roots deeply embedded on the battle field. Because of this students learn combative techniques and as such do not enter into the modern sporting side of the martial arts (competition).
The techniques taught help to develop students in many different areas, traditionally developing the mind, body and spirit through the practical application of the art.
Students learn practical street proven techniques that may one day prove invaluable in providing them with a highly effective form of self protection. To learn more about Hapkido in Warwickshire. Call Paul Hastings 01926 332935 David Hastings 01926 771292
